Synopsis

Le film consacré à Daniel Buren s’attache particulièrement à l’homme, à sa trajectoire, et, en contrepoint, à son œuvre et à ses écrits. Bien qu’étant l’un des artistes français les plus renommés internationalement, sa démarche reste pourtant souvent méconnue. De l’artiste, le public ne retient que son système de bandes rayées, mais ne connaît aucunement son travail critique et autocritique direct avec son œuvre.

This documentary on Daniel Buren, an artist who was a pioneer in his generation, focuses first of all on the man and his life story and places his work and writings as a counterpoint to this. Even though he is one of the most renowned French artists internationally, his approach often goes unrecognised in his home country to this day. The general public only knows of his formula of alternating white and coloured vertical stripes, but has no knowledge of his critical and self-critical approach to his own work.
The director follows Daniel Buren through three major exhibitions of his work and recounts the artist’s career. The connecting thread for the story is provided by an interview with the artist in his country house by the art critic Guy Tortosa, which allows the documentary to bring out the origins of his work and his questioning of contemporary art.
